Today is Friday, April 25th (Happy Birthday Lilyana)
The Topic or Question of the Day is:
Run for the Mint
Tomorrow at the annual Kentucky Derby, over 120,000 mint juleps will be served. 1000 pounds of fresh mint will be needed along with 60,000 pounds of ice according to kentuckyderby, com.
Mint (spearmint and peppermint) is a member of what family? The Mint Family! Other members of the Mint Family are basil, marjoram, oregano, rosemary, summer and winter savory and thyme. Peppermint is an offspring of spearmint that is native to the Mediterranean and used in biblical times. The active ingredient in mint is menthol, an amazing oil. The interesting fact about menthol is the way it affects heat/cold perception. When the oil hits our warm mouth, in small amounts, it actually cools our mouth. Small doses will also make a cool drink feel very cold. In large doses, menthol it is used as an anesthetic producing a warm feeling.
Mint looks beautiful and refreshing infused in your glass or pitcher of water and can even help tummy troubles. It can also be infused in tea and makes a great summer treat. Try chopping it into small pieces and place in your lettuce or pasta salad for an interesting flavor.
Quote or Tip of the Day:
Many teachers are giving their students a peppermint before taking a test to stimulate the brain, however, there is conflicting scientific evidence that it works. It seems to help from calming the stomach from the nervousness accompanied by the testing process. Peppermint gum may seem to help, but it is actually the act of chewing that helps one concentrate.
Take Action Today:
Try some fresh mint in your water, tea, lettuce or pasta salad this week.
